With the presidency of the G20 and a seat on the UN Security Council, it has been a significant year for Australia on the global stage. Its leadership of the G20 has, moreover, been important. First, the G20’s increasingly bloated agenda, with little in the way of actual results, has encouraged increasing cynicism about the group’s effectiveness. This meant the success or otherwise of the G20 this year was even more significant than usual.
