Afghan Mineral Wealth: Blessing or Curse

The estimated $3 trillion worth of mineral resources mapped by U.S. geologists in Afghanistan has the potential to provide the backbone for a sustainable economy. However, in the absence of necessary precautions this blessing has the potential to become a “resource curse” – fostering corruption, conflict and instability while financing an ever-bloodier insurgency. It is, therefore, little surprise that some experts contend that the country is not transitioning from “war to peace,” but rather from “military conflict to resource conflict.”
