Defeating ISIL now or defeating Al Qaeda in 2007 should equal defeating sectarian oppression, not defeating the manifestation of its symptoms. The US got the mask of the Iranians in Nouri Al Maliki then, and will get the Iranians, without a mask, now. Iraq’s Prime Minister, Haider Al Abaidi, is the representation of the sum of forces acting on the ground. What counts are not his personal intentions but the fact that that this sum of forces is Iranian controlled.
