Recognising the Realities of Kosovo

It is hard to believe that ten years have passed since members of the Kosovo Assembly gathered on 17 February 2008 to declare independence. Although the move had been long expected, coming at the end of a two-year UN-led status process, it is easy to forget how significant a step it was, and how much it divided international opinion at the time.

Traditionally, the international community took a very negative view of unilateral declarations of independence. In this case, however, the United States and many European countries felt they had no choice but to allow Kosovo to secede.
