Chile’s Sebastián Piñera Hits Rock Bottom

Last week, the Center for Public Studies (Centro de Estudios Públicos, CEP)—Chile’s most prestigious pollster—published the results of its biannual survey. The poll gained more attention than usual because the CEP conducted its fieldwork in the wake of protests that rocked the country, starting on October 18 (18-O). The results provide a critical snapshot of the country’s political establishment, but even more so for president Sebastián Piñera. According to the poll, only six percent of Chileans approve of the president. Now, an extremely unpopular Piñera must somehow govern a country that faces uncertain times—including an economic downturn and an upcoming plebiscite that will likely trigger a new constitution.
