Since 2017, China has promoted an alternative world order that seeks to position China as the leading representative of Global South countries. In recent years, ‘head-of-state diplomacy’, as well as defence diplomacy conducted by members of the CMC and China’s defence minister, have become important tools in furthering this aim.
