Lessons From a Scholar of Power

Over his long career in government and academia, Joseph S. Nye, Jr., transformed the field of international relations, one of his seminal contributions being the concept of “soft power,” or states’ ability to influence others without resorting to coercion or payoffs. Following his passing, it is worth reflecting on his legacy – including the current issues and challenges that most preoccupied him.
