The Flaw in the New Iran Deal

Vice President JD Vance has hailed his Switzerland negotiations over Iran’s nuclear program as diplomatic progress. Middle East Forum scholar Dr. Michael Rubin argues otherwise. IAEA inspections, he notes, derive not from the 2015 JCPOA but from the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, which already binds Iran, so Tehran is being paid billions to accept what it agreed to decades ago. Worse, IAEA inspections reach only declared sites, leaving Iran’s suspected undeclared facilities, the heart of the problem, untouched.
