On December 26, 2025, Israel became the first country to formally recognize the government of Somaliland. For a statelet aiming for independence for over 30 years, this was a major step on the path toward global recognition. Somaliland’s president, Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi, described the recognition as a “historic moment,” paving the way to the democratic governance.
