Will Obama Bomb Iran?

Reuel Marc Gerecht is a senior fellow with the Foundation for Defense of Democracies. Could Barack Obama preemptively strike Iran? Not likely. The president's flight from Iraq and soon Afghanistan; his ever-moving red lines for the Iran-allied Assad regime; the administration's strategic plan to pivot to Asia, which, preeminently, means leaving the Middle East; comments by senior military commanders that they cannot foresee another land war in Asia; the president's obvious discomfort with using the bully-pulpit menacingly; and his enormous cuts in defense spending all suggest "peace," not war. The only likely catalyst for an American strike: Iran's supreme leader. A misstep by him -- and he makes them frequently -- could still provoke Mr. Obama to do something that he does not want to do.
