Run for President and Lose

So many secretaries of state have been losing presidential candidates that it almost seems like a prerequisite for the job. However, there is also a club of individuals that have run losing presidential campaigns before, and after, serving as secretary of state. If Clinton ran for president and fell short of winning the White House, she would join James Blaine, Henry Clay, Philander Knox and Daniel Webster in this club. The most recent former secretary of state to run for president was Alexander Haig. He ran in 1988 and struggled to compete in the Republican primary that was won by George H.W. Bush.
