Central Europe Turns Right

Within days, new governments in the Czech Republic and Slovakia will receive the formal blessings of their presidents, bringing central Europe's 2010 election season to a close.

It is a season that has produced an apparently uniform change, with the right winning power in the Czech Republic, Hungary and Slovakia, and winning the presidency in Poland. There have been some striking similarities, with two new parties in both the Czech and Slovak governing coalitions. In Hungary's case, the swing to the right has been so great that one party – Viktor Orbán's Fidesz – can change the constitution.
