How Fidesz Lost a Stronghold in a Rout

After the Hódmezővásárhely election was over, someone on Facebook posed the following question: “Tell me honestly, did anyone believe that Péter Márki-Zay could win this election?” I know at least one such man: Mátyás Eörsi, a DK politician, who sent me an e-mail at 6:17 this morning. It was a copy of a Facebook entry in which, by way of introduction, he outlined the pitfalls of a politician predicting the outcome of an election. Nonetheless, he announced that in his opinion the independent candidate, Péter Márki-Zay, would win the election. He had heard that Fidesz politicians in town are rather pessimistic about their chances. János Lázár, who still runs the show even though no longer  mayor, cast his vote early in the morning without any press coverage. The local Fidesz organizers decided not to have a victory party because holding such an event would be disrespectful to the memory of the late mayor. Surely, this was not the reason. Fidesz is expecting defeat, said Eörsi. “Hódmezővásárhely will be Lázár's Waterloo,” he predicted.
