The Atlantic Charter: 85 Years Later

By August of 1941 most of Europe cowered under the heel of Hitler. Germany had reclaimed the Rhineland, annexed Austria, occupied Czechoslovakia, then invaded and occupied Poland, Denmark, Norway, Luxembourg, The Netherlands, Belgium, France, Yugoslavia and Greece, and in June had launched a seemingly unstoppable assault on the Soviet Union. Europe had completely submitted. Britain stood alone.
